S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders has been a staple in middle school curriculums across multiple decades. While the text does offer great literary depth and compelling discussion points, it provides an equally rich springboard for teaching argument and rhetorical analysis.
This lesson plan bundle includes five diverse lesson plans with a particular emphasis on (1) understanding rhetorical decisions from the speaker’s perspective, and (2) conveying analysis through composition.
Each lesson is fully aligned to the common core, designed to promote the skills necessitated by next generation tests such as PARCC, and grounded in the student-centered instructional practices valued by new teacher evaluation models such as Danielson and Marzano. All lesson plans include corresponding handouts and rubrics for assessment!
