Teach Rhetorical Analysis With Budweiser’s 2016 Super Bowl Commercial

As is the case with many commercials that air during the big game, Budweiser’s “Don’t Drive Drunk” ad (featuring Helen Mirren) poured plenty of resources into ensuring that this sixty-second clip would effectively build their brand.  A careful analysis begs the question — is the argument’s purpose to diminish drunk driving, or to sell more beer?

We’ve conducted a rhetorical analysis for you, embedded below (simply scroll down to view it).  The corresponding lesson plans focus on general rhetorical analysis, specific rhetorical choices, and analytical writing.  All learning tasks are aligned to standards, designed for collaborative small-group work, and culminate with a writing task (rubric included).
