Lesson Description

This resource is an extension of our “evacuation rhetoric” lesson in that it provides a series of texts at varied levels that lend themselves nicely to rhetorical analysis.  These texts can be used one by one with a whole class, differentiated by students, or, our preferred strategy, utilized as a “jigsaw” lesson with small groups.

This bundle includes a handout to guide students’ analysis, as well as the following text sets:

  • Excerpts from Florida Governor Rick Scott
  • Excerpts from Texas Governor Rick Abbott
  • Excerpts from Vice President Mike Pence
  • Excerpts from Secretary of Homeland Security Elaine Duke
  • Excerpts from First Lady Melania Trump
  • Excerpts from President Donald Trump
  • Excerpts from an article describing JetBlue’s decision to cap evacuation flight costs at $99
